M65 and M66

M66 and M65 taken MArch27th 2013. These two galaxies make up 2/3 of the Leo Trio which lies approximately 35 million light years away in the constellation Leo. M66 is about 100,000 light years across and M65 is about 120,000 in diameter. These were discovered in 1780 by Charles Messier. On March 21st, M. Sugano, Kakogawa, Hyogo-ken, Japan reported the discovery of an apparent supernova in Messier M65. It is highlighted here and has been labelled SN 2013am.
